Q&A w/ Sarah Cork, Chief Growth Officer @ City Group Security
Thanks so much for taking the time to speak with us, Sarah! Firstly, please introduce yourself!
I am thrilled to respond to your questions and share my insights as a seasoned professional in the security industry. As a woman in a male-dominated field, I have faced numerous challenges, but these experiences have shaped my leadership style and fuelled my passion for driving meaningful change and showing that inclusion and diversity are the tapestry to deliver high performance.
Can you tell us a little bit about your personal journey and leadership style?
As one of the few women in the room, I have learned to be resilient, adaptable, and strategic. I have developed a collaborative approach, recognising the importance of building strong relationships and empowering others to drive growth and innovation. My leadership style is centred around inclusivity, empathy, and a commitment to creating a better world than the one I entered. If I could leave one legacy it would be to pave a way for every woman that wants to work in security and to provide them with the opportunities, I have had and more.
How have you seen attitudes to diversity and inclusion change through the years?
Since I started my career, I have noticed significant progress in diversity and inclusion. The industry has become more aware of the importance of representation, and there are more initiatives aimed at promoting equality and equity. However, there is still much work to be done, and I am committed to continuing to drive change through my roles and partnerships. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion is just about doing the right thing and treating people fairly, it is something that should be part of a good business culture.
What would be your advice to underrepresented women in the industry?
To women navigating industries where they are underrepresented, I would advise them to be confident, persistent, and open to learning. Seek out mentors of equal gender, build a strong network, and be willing to take calculated risks. Most importantly, remember that your unique perspective and experiences are valuable assets that can drive innovation and growth. Don’t see gender as a blocker and embrace who you are and the qualities you bring.
How is technology enabling you in your role at the moment?
As Chief Growth Officer, I have a deep appreciation for technology and its potential to drive transformation. I believe that AI has the power to enable growth, improve efficiency, and enhance public safety. I am excited about the opportunities that AI presents and will be leveraging it to drive meaningful change in the security industry. Ai is an enabler; however, you need to feed it the content to be able to add real value. Technology will not replace security personnel it will enable them with their decision making, analytics, trends etc but the human eye is still very much needed in the world of security.
Can you tell us about a time where you've overcome gender bias and stereotypes?
Throughout my career, I have encountered gender bias and stereotypes, who hasn't right, no matter what gender you are! To overcome these challenges, I have focused on building strong relationships, demonstrating my expertise, and seeking out mentors and coaches who can offer guidance and support. I believe that by working together and promoting inclusivity, we can create a more equitable industry that benefits everyone.
In what way is female leadership different?
In my experience, female leaders often approach growth and innovation with a more collaborative and empathetic mindset. We tend to prioritise people and relationships, recognising that these are critical to driving success. I believe that this approach can lead to more sustainable and meaningful growth. However, the true growth comes when you have an equal gender team, and you watch the creativity and innovation explode to new heights. At City Group Security we have an equal gender management team and a female majority board, and this allows us to thrive.
What would be your advice for younger women who are coming into the industry?
To young women aspiring to leadership roles, I would advise them to be bold, take risks, and seek out every opportunity for growth. Surround yourself with cheerleaders who support and empower you, and never be afraid to ask for help. Remember that your unique perspective and experiences are valuable assets that can drive innovation and growth. Take the seat at the table and firmly assert yourself in the chair, you need to own the narrative and add the value that you bring.
Who have been your biggest influences and mentors?
I have been fortunate to have had many influential mentors throughout my career, including my Husband Rob Elliott who has been my biggest supporter and then industry personnel like Mike Pearson, Hannah Wadey, Don Randall, Simon Giles, David Ward, and Jayne King. These individuals have provided guidance, support, and encouragement, helping me to grow both personally and professionally. They may duck for cover when they see me coming as normally, I have a flourish of ideas and want to deliver asap. I know I can pick the phone up to any of these people and ask for help, that is what mentors do without judgement.
How are you currently advocating for Diversity and Inclusion?
As a leader, I am committed to advocating for diversity and inclusion in my business and the wider industry. I believe that by promoting inclusivity and equity, we can create a better world and drive meaningful change. I am proud to be part of initiatives such as The City Security Council EDI Board, TinyG Advisory Board, Security Commonwealth EDI Group, Our Safer City Prevent Violence against Women & Girls and Domestic Abuse and as a Trustee for Consortium for the Prevention of Suicide which is very close to my heart. One of my proudest moments is where i saw real connection fostered through the City Security Council when the EDI Board launched "Change the Face of Security" Campaign and engaged with all of the member companies to film our fabulous front line teams that work around the clock to provide public protection. This drove more benefits and impact then we envisaged and elevated the profiles of the people that should be recognised and rewarded. I hope every person who was featured in the story telling goes on to achieve their dreams as they are the real stars of the show.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
If I could share one piece of advice that I wish I had received earlier in my career, it would be to be more confident in my abilities and to take more risks. I would encourage others to do the same, recognising that growth and innovation often require stepping outside of our comfort zones.
I feel so fortunate to be recognised for my contributions to the security industry and winning The Contribution to Industry award at The Women in Security Awards in 2023 was a high in my career and an award I had always wanted to win. I am passionate about continuing to drive meaningful change through my role at City Group Security and the voluntary work I do to for the industry. I was always told as a child that you can’t criticise the work of others if you have not offered your hand to support, this stays true to me and hence my band width stretching so far and wanting to drive meaningful change that lasts.
I believe that by working together and promoting inclusivity, we can create a better world and drive growth and innovation.
Thanks again for taking the time to speak with us!
Thank you for the opportunity to share my insights
