My tech story: Farnaz Mostowfi, Solution & Data Architect, Ataccama
Everyone who comes to Women of Silicon Roundabout has an inspiring story - succeeding in tech takes talent, determination and persistence. That's why we have launched the My Tech Story series - hearing from some regular WOSR attendees about how they got into tech, their career path, and the advice they would give to the next generation.
First up is Farnaz Mostowfi, who is a Solution and Data Architect at data quality specialists Ataccama. From starting as a data engineer in Iran to her current role developing and delivering data design solutions to customers, Farnaz has spent her career as a bridge between tech development and business requirements - a vital skill for anybody in tech. Here is her tech story.
Can you tell us your story? When and how did you become interested in tech?
I developed my passion for technology during my university years, which began with a BA in Computer Science. From the very first lessons on the foundations of programming and the principles of databases, I knew I had chosen the right path. There was something fascinating about solving problems and creating logical solutions from scratch.
I then pursued a Master's degree in Electronic Commerce, where I particularly enjoyed learning and understanding how technology interacts with global diversity and modern-day constraints.
Over time, I realised that the field is not just about technical tools and platforms; it's about creativity, problem-solving, and making a meaningful impact where needed most. That realisation continues to inspire me every day."
What's your job role now, and what was the career path that took you there?
After completing my degrees, I began my career in Iran as a data engineer, working closely with business analysts to bridge the gap between technical development and business needs. This role provided me with invaluable hands-on experience and a deep understanding of how technical solutions can drive business success.
After moving to the UK, I transitioned into a consulting role specialising in Business Intelligence and Data Integration. This position allowed me to work with a variety of industries, tackling various challenges and expanding my knowledge of data systems and their real-world applications.
A few years ago, I shifted my focus to the solution side of data systems and transitioned into the role of an architect. In this capacity, I became more involved in designing end-to-end solutions, ensuring they align with both technical feasibility and strategic business objectives.
In my current role at Ataccama, I specialise in data quality, reference data management, and master data management. My responsibilities include sharing my expertise with customers looking to implement and expand their data management systems and helping them design solutions that meet their needs and support their long-term strategic goals.
What advice would you give a woman starting out in tech?
While it's true that historically there have been more men working in data and tech, there is absolutely no research suggesting that men or women are inherently better suited for tech. Success in this industry is driven by skills, creativity, and a passion for solving problems - qualities that are not limited by gender.
Remember that you are not alone. There are many incredible women in leadership roles across the tech industry who continue to inspire others. Don't hesitate to approach them for advice, mentorship, or support. Their journeys are filled with invaluable lessons that can guide and motivate you in your own path.
As a woman, you bring a unique perspective to the table, and that diversity is one of your greatest strengths. Whether it's a different way of problem-solving, collaborative skills, or insights that enrich team dynamics, your contributions are crucial in shaping a more inclusive and innovative tech industry.
Finally, believe in yourself and your abilities. Confidence and resilience are key. Surround yourself with a supportive network of peers, mentors, and allies who can uplift you when challenges arise. Remember, you have just as much potential to excel and lead in tech as anyone else.
Why do you come to Women of Silicon Roundabout?
For the last couple of years, I have attended these events to connect with and build a network of like-minded, talented women in the tech industry. It's inspiring to meet so many wonderful individuals, hear their stories, and learn from their experiences.
I also want to support and celebrate diversity in the industry. These gatherings highlight the incredible impact women are making in tech despite the challenges of being in the minority. I hope that with these conversations and events, we can help pave the way for more women to thrive in the data and tech industry.
