HomeAgendaIt’s Getting Hot In…

Session Overview

How can developers help lower the carbon emissions of the world? With the average person in the UK spending over 6 hours on the internet each day, imagine the amount of data that is being transferred across the world at any moment in time.

This all comes at a cost, in this talk I will look at the carbon cost of that data and the effects on our planet and how we can improve that by making some small and big changes to the way we code and the way we architect digital solutions.

As a senior software developer at Sky I have had a lot of experience when it comes to building software and how the small changes can have the biggest effects. I’ve influenced my team to think differently about how we code and am having a positive impact on the carbon usage of our websites.

Session Key Takeaways:

  • Analyse how the tech world is effecting our planet
  • Explore the changes we can make to improve our carbon emissions. How to take instant action with helping our planet
  • Discover best practices for green software development

This session is for you if…you are technical and non-technical and interested in enhancing your knowledge of green software development.

The only constant is change. Companies are constantly going through transformations, and it’s not always easy to accept and respond, either as an individual or company. That’s why strength, adaptability and innovative thinking are key attributes of a successful change. If companies harness their collective strengths and visibly prioritise diversity and inclusion alongside digitalisation, then they will attract the right talent to bring different perspectives to the table and inspire breakthrough ideas to complement transformations.

Laura explores why diversity and inclusivity are key values to uphold in all parts of a company, whether: departments, individual teams, local employee networks or on wider strategic scales, through personal stories and real-life examples from Shell’s own Powering Progress transformation journey.

Join Laura’s inspiring keynote for real-life examples and personal insights about how:

  • Innovative digital technologies are key to accelerating a company’s transformation
  • Creativity, inclusion and ethics play critical roles across organisations

Data Mesh is not a technology or service that you can buy from a SaaS company – it’s a company-wide understanding that Data is produced a certain way, presented a certain way and maintained a certain way. You can’t scale properly if you’re not data driven and you can’t be data driven if every team is doing their own thing when it comes to data.

Over the past few years, loveholidays has been working hard to implement Data Mesh to dramatically improve company-wide data utilisation and increase trust in data. Compassionate Refactoring

60 mins
  • Track - Software
  • Software & Development
  • Technical
  • Clare Sudbery

    Technical Coach

    Sudbery Software Engineering

Within coding, the desire to consistently refactor and improve code is a common aspiration yet frequently remains unfulfilled. This session delves into the often-overlooked barriers that impede this process, with a special focus on the constraints of time and, more crucially, the lack of compassion in the coding environment. The discussion extends beyond external pressures to address the self-criticism that developers often face when dealing with imperfect code.

In an industry where perfection is highly prized, this talk highlights the importance of acknowledging and accepting the initial phase of writing suboptimal code as a necessary step towards mastery. It emphasises the transformative power of kindness and forgiveness in the coding process, proposing that embracing our coding flaws can paradoxically lead to the development of superior code. Join us for an insightful exploration of how fostering a culture of empathy and understanding in coding can unlock greater potential for innovation and excellence.
