People managers at all levels are either enablers or blockers of career progression for those in their charge. With that being said, every leader who line manages other people, whether it’s one person or 100, should consider themselves an ally to everyone. Allyship should be synonymous with leadership because they both involve proactive support and championship, and managers have the huge responsibility of making sure they are doing their best to support and develop everyone in their charge. By demystifying what diversity, equity and inclusion is really about, more leaders can start to recognise the critical role they play in shaping the make-up and culture of an organisation.
